Report links low vitamin D levels to lung disease

Low levels of vitamin D have been linked with a high risk of lung disease by a new medical report from John Hopkins University in America. Reviewing medical information gathered on more than 6,000 adults over a 10-year period, Johns Hopkins researchers found that lower than normal blood levels of vitamin D were linked to increased risk of early signs of interstitial lung disease (ILD). Virus outbreak prompts Russian bird ban in the UAE

A virus outbreak has prompted UAE environment chiefs to impose a ban on live birds from Russia being brought into the country. The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has halted the import of all species of domestic and wild live birds, ornamental birds, chicks, hatching eggs, meats and meat products and non-heat-treated wastes after the outbreak of a highly pathogenic strain of bird flu, H5N2, on a farm in the central region of Kurskaya Oblast in Russia. To sleep in or not to sleep in? Science seems as conflicted as the rest of us

Feeling groggy this morning? Welcome to the club: around 90 per cent of UAE residents reportedly get less than eight hours sleep a night. And the effect is more than just drifting off at your desk. Studies have shown that not getting enough sleep can lead to ill-health and an early grave. But now there may be a remedy — making up for lost sleep at the weekend. A study of the sleeping habits of more than 38,000 Swedish adults found the detrimental effects of getting barely five hours sleep during the week was cancelled out by getting at least...

Family hope for recovery of Emirati 7-year-old left quadriplegic by hit-and-run

The parents of 7-year-old Meznah Basaloum have lived through any family's worst nightmare. In August 2016, the young Emirati was walking with her older cousin to feed her pet dove when a speeding car lost control and ploughed into her, leaving her crumpled body in the road before driving off. She is lucky to be alive: left in a coma for four weeks, Meznah, who is a twin and one of five children, suffered severe bleeding to her brain and lungs, fractured hips and spinal cord damage that has left her paralysed from the neck down. She has a host...
