Germany’s Ottobock tests industrial exoskeletons as it seeks more growth opportunities - Dotemirates

Germany’s Ottobock tests industrial exoskeletons as it seeks more growth opportunities

German artificial limb manufacturer Ottobock plans to start selling a mechanical exoskeleton that makes manual labour for factory workers easier this week, joining a field already crowded with major industrial players and start-ups. The 99-year-old firm, which started out making prosthetics for World War One veterans, is seeking to tap new growth opportunities ahead of a possible stock market listing. The family-owned company has tested the Paexo, a wearable upper-body exoskeleton designed to ease the physical strain of repetitive overhead assembly work, on 30 workers at a Volkswagen plant in Bratislava. After 80 percent of workers said they would recommend...

Twitter working on a quick peek feature on iOS and Android

Although the list of features users ask for on Twitter keeps on growing -- editable tweets, more proactive anti-abuse features, more easily parsed conversation threads, etc -- but despite that, the devs at Twitter keep on working on and pushing out smaller (often useful) features that no one really asked for. And a new feature like that is being tested right now.Twitter is currently testing an option that will pop up the profile info when you tap on an @username in the main timeline of the app. It may not seem like a huge deal, but anyone who has spent...

Photos from NASA’s lost Opportunity

This week, NASA said goodbye to Opportunity, a rover that roamed the surface of Mars for nearly 15 years before it was silenced by a planet-encompassing dust storm last summer. Over the years, the rover hit a lot of milestones, including completing a marathon. Its engineers managed to keep it working through standard Mars hazards like brutal temperature swings and dust storms and as it coped with problems of memory loss. In the end, its mission lasted 5,352 Martian days, which is almost 60 times longer than the 90-day mission that it was originally expected to complete. Data collected by...

At-home HPV tests attempt to reduce cervical cancer rates

Getting screened for strains of the cervical cancer-causing human papillomavirus (HPV) can be difficult for many women, but notgetting tested can have deadly consequences. In 2019, an estimated 4,250 women will die from invasive cervical cancer — a number that, the American Cancer Society notes, has not changed much in 15 years. To bring that number down, some companies are trying to bring HPV tests out of the doctors’ offices and into women’s homes. “Half of the cervical cancers that continue to occur in the US are amongst women who rarely screen or have never been screened,” says Vikrant Sahasrabuddhe,...
