TIFF 2018: Ryan Gosling visits coffee shop that pursued him on social media

Ryan Gosling plays astronaut Neil Armstrong in his new film “First Man,” but he proved he’s pretty down to earth at the Toronto International Film Festival on Tuesday. Coffee shop owner Joelle Murray said the London, Ont.-born movie star turned up mid-afternoon to say hello and greet patrons, despite the fact her east-end shop is a 20-minute drive from the main festival strip. Murray had been pursuing the star since Sept. 3 with a social media campaign in which she posted photos of herself and a life-size cardboard cutout of Gosling, promising 15 per cent off if he showed up...

Tupac's letter to Madonna goes to auction and bidding starts at $100,000

(CNN)After a long legal battle, a letter Tupac Shakur wrote to Madonna will now be auctioned. The late rapper and the singer had dated prior to his death. In a three-page handwritten note Shakur sent from prison in 1995, when he was 24 and she was then in her 30s, he wrote about their relationship and expressed regret to Madonna. "I must apologize to you. Because like you said I haven't been the kind of friend I know I am capable of being. Not because I am evil or because you weren't worthy but at the risk of sounding over dramatic,...

'The Lion King' hits familiar notes in adapting Disney classic

(CNN)Anticipating a bountiful box-office feast, "The Lion King" deviates sparingly from the beloved 1994 original, for better and worse. The result is a polished and satisfying film, yet one that conspicuously feels even more like a consumer product than most Disney revivals of its animated classics.Part of that, perhaps inevitably, stems from the absence of human characters. The realistic appearance of the animals thus retains an animated texture, much like "The Jungle Book" -- director Jon Favreau's first successful foray into the studio's animation-update business, which at least had a human kid at its core. The total immersion into a world...

The Last Czars: the historical drama that the whole of Russia is laughing at

Forgive the makers of this series, for they know not what they do. All you need to know to understand everything about The Last Czars is summed up in this early sample dialogue from an exchange between the tsar and his new wife. He has just murmured: “Oh Mrs Romanov!” to her in bed on their wedding night. Then he says: “You know, my father was a great leader. The people adored him.” She replies: “It’s not the people I worry about. It’s your family. You need to be strong! You’re the tsar!” This is the level we are operating...

'I feel exhausted by being exposed': kd lang on being a lesbian icon

A few years ago, I lay in my garden on a hot summer’s day, listening to a few familiar notes of a song wafting over from next door. As it reached the chorus, I mimed along. When my neighbour played it for a third time, I was tempted to shout: “You OK?” I knew they weren’t: anyone listening constantly to kd lang’s Constant Craving, a paean to longing and desire, was surely in the throes of a deep and unrequited crush. The track, released in 1992, is the last on lang’s second album, Ingénue. The Grammy award-nominated, multi-platinum-selling album became...

Men behaving badly: why cinema's great hellraisers were a breed apart

The death of the film and TV star Rip Torn, whose drunken exuberance so often resulted in the breaking of glass, the splintering of wood and the bandaging of limbs, has led the industry to ponder that exotic creature whose rock’n’roll behaviour, from the 1960s onwards, persisted for decades to tolerant chortling from the similarly inclined or wistfully well-behaved gentlemen of the press. And that creature is the “hellraiser” – a term that originates from a defiant credo espoused by the hard-drinking, hard-living Hollywood legend Richard Burton: in 2013 led to a similar outpouring of grief for the booze legends...
