Report: US Native American health agency at crossroads

Emergency rooms shut down for months. Hospitals put patients at risk for opioid abuse and overdoses. A longtime pediatrician was charged with sexually abusing children. The federal agency that administers health care for more than 2.5 million Native Americans has long been plagued with problems that have kept it from improving health care delivery. Money, staffing, infrastructure, health disparities and a general lack of accountability all have played a part. A federal report released Thursday said things won't get better unless the Indian Health Service takes a serious look at its organizational structure, which the report said fails to adequately...

What parents need to know about their kids vaping

In an exclusive interview with "CBS This Morning," Juul Labs CEO Kevin Burns acknowledged we do not know the long-term effects of vaping and he cautioned that kids and non-smokers shouldn't be using e-cigarettes. The interview comes as federal health officials are investigating nearly 200 cases of severe lung illnesses among vapers.Dr. Tara Narula told "CBS This Morning" that even with the lack of long-term research, it's clear kids shouldn't be doing it."You can argue the merits for smokers to help them quit, but nobody is saying that this has value or benefit in the youth population," Narula said. "When...

Warsaw sewage plant malfunction contaminates Vistula river

Polish authorities on Thursday were warning residents in cities along the Vistula river that runs into the Baltic Sea of a "crisis" situation after Warsaw's new sewage collection plant malfunctioned. The health minister and local authorities said they have been closely monitoring the levels of contamination north of the Polish capital, including by nitrogen, since the problem began late Tuesday, but wouldn't disclose the results of the tests. The sewage is being discharged at about 3,000 liters (nearly 800 gallons) a second at Warsaw's northern edge and goes north without affecting the city's waters, authorities said. "There is no reason...

'This ain't your mother's marijuana," surgeon general says

Federal health officials issued a national warning Thursday against marijuana use by adolescents and pregnant women, as more states legalize the increasingly potent drug for medicinal and recreational use. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar and Surgeon General Jerome Adams made the announcement, with Azar calling marijuana "a dangerous drug." Officials said President Donald Trump has donated $100,000 — one-quarter of his annual government salary — toward a digital campaign to raise awareness of the risks. Trump has forgone his official salary since taking office. The warning comes as legal marijuana has grown into a $10-billion industry in the...

Pinterest Limits Sources of Vaccine Content

Aug. 29, 2019 -- From now on, if you do vaccine-related searches on Pinterest, you'll only get results from public health organizations. "We're taking this approach because we believe that showing vaccine misinformation alongside resources from public health experts isn't responsible," Ifeoma Ozoma, the social media company's public policy and social impact manager said in a statement released Wednesday, CNN reported. "As we continue to tackle health misinformation, we remove it and the accounts that spread it from our service," Ozoma added. Pinterest will only show results from institutions such as the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease...
