Instagram will send a pop-up about opioid addiction support if you search certain hashtags

Instagram says people are using the platform’s hashtags to find addiction support and communities as well as illegal drugs. So, in response, the company is rolling out a pop-up today that’ll provide users with drug addiction resources if they search certain hashtags, like “opioid.” The pop-up reads: “If you or someone you know is struggling with opioid or substance misuse, find ways to get free and confidential treatment referrals, as well as information about substance abuse, prevention, and recovery.” The user can then opt to get support resources that Instagram developed with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration,...

Spotify, YouTube, and others get reimagined as retro anime tech

The likes of Instagram, Spotify, and YouTube might all be high-tech modern internet services, but they all have their roots in another era of analog technology. Now, one artist has imagined what these services would look like if they were actually made for that bygone era, whether it’s an Instagram-branded Polaroid camera, a Spotify cassette player, or a VHS tape player featuring YouTube’s color scheme. Okay, to be fair, the designs from concept artist Sheng Lam, noted by Kotakuearlier this week, don’t technically name each of the services they’re based on, but it would be hard not to mistake SoundKloud...

A healthy lifestyle may offset genetic risk for Alzheimer's

A healthy lifestyle can cut your risk of developing Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia even if you have genes that raise your risk for these mind-destroying diseases, a large study has found. People with high genetic risk and poor health habits were about three times more likely to develop dementia versus those with low genetic risk and good habits, researchers reported Sunday. Regardless of how much genetic risk someone had, a good diet, adequate exercise, limiting alcohol and not smoking made dementia less likely. "I consider that good news," said John Haaga of the U.S. National Institute on Aging,...

This video reimagines the iPhone as a retro Macintosh

Imagine if Apple, instead of inventing something completely new for its original iPhone design, had maintained the look of its iconic Macintosh or the iMac G3. The phone would be more eye-catching than the all-glass gadget we have now, if designer FuturePunk’s imagined, digital 3D models are any indication. This week, he published a look at what he thinks Apple could have created if it modeled the iPhone off either of those PCs. He recreates their commercials, too, except starring the phones. While, yes, it would be completely impractical to have a phone fully based on either of these computers,...

Police test lighting in probe of Uber self-driving crash

Police outside Phoenix recently closed part of a street to conduct a lighting test as an investigation continues into the 2018 death of a woman who was struck and killed by an Uber self-driving SUV. The Maricopa County Attorney's Office says prosecutors asked for more investigation before making a decision about whether to charge backup driver Rafaela Vasquez who was supposed to take control in an emergency. Another prosecutor's office decided in March not to charge Uber. The Tuesday night lighting test was conducted near the crash site in Tempe. The Arizona Republic reports one man drove a white Volvo...

How to Tell If Someone Is Bugging or Tracking You

Are you being bugged? To find out, the first step is to consider carefully whether you are sufficiently interesting to warrant surveillance. If you’re a crook, a cheater, or a keeper of political or corporate secrets, the answer may be yes. But if you’re just a regular Joe, run through this handy checklist: Did you recently snarf down one or more of those slightly odd-tasting cookies you found in your teenager’s backpack? Has any medical professional ever used the word paranoid in your presence? Now reach up and feel the top of your head. Is there anything there? Is it made...
