FDA takes 'historic action' on youth e-cigarette 'epidemic'

(CNN)Concerned with an "epidemic" surge in teen use of e-cigarettes, the head of the US Food and Drug Administration announced today a "historic action" against more than 1,300 retailers and five major manufacturers for their roles in perpetuating youth access to the devices in the US."I use the word epidemic with great care," said FDA commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb. "E-cigs have become an almost ubiquitous -- and dangerous -- trend among teens. The disturbing and accelerating trajectory of use we're seeing in youth, and the resulting path to addiction, must end. It's simply not tolerable." Juul and the vape debate:...

Order: Abortions can continue at Missouri's lone clinic

A Missouri commissioner on Friday ruled that the state's only abortion clinic can continue providing the service at least until August as a fight over its license plays out, adding that there's a "likelihood" that the clinic will succeed in the dispute. Administrative Hearing Commissioner Sreenivasa Rao Dandamudi granted what's called a "stay," which will allow the St. Louis Planned Parenthood clinic to continue providing abortions past Friday. The state health department last week refused to renew the clinic's license, but a St. Louis judge issued a court order allowing the procedure to continue through Friday. St. Louis Circuit Court...

Flint hears from prosecutors who dropped water charges

Prosecutors who dropped charges against eight people in the Flint water scandal explained their decision in a public forum Friday night, telling frustrated and shocked residents they must look at hundreds of mobile devices and millions of documents that a previous investigative team never reviewed. Michigan Solicitor General Fadwa Hammoud and Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy spoke to about 100 residents Friday night at a union hall in the city, two weeks after dismissing charges against the former state health director and other officials. The three-year probe was relaunched, and charges could be refiled. "We have received information that is...

FDA Cracks Down Again on Kratom Products

June 28, 2019 -- The FDA this week again cracked down on marketers and sellers of products containing kratom, an herbal plant used recreationally and as medicine but is not legally marketed in the U.S. as a drug or dietary supplement. The FDA issued warning letters to Cali Botanicals of Rancho Cordova, CA, and Kratom NC of Wilmington, NC , ''for illegally selling unapproved, misbranded kratom-containing products with unproven claims about their ability to treat or cure opioid addiction and withdrawal symptoms." The latest warnings are two of several the FDA has issued to alert consumers about what it says...

Appeals court refuses to reconsider abortion ruling

A federal appeals court says it won't reconsider a ruling that upheld a Kentucky law requiring doctors to perform ultrasounds and show fetal images to patients prior to abortions. In April, a divided panel of the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the 2017 law is constitutional, reversing a lower court judge. The American Civil Liberties Union, representing the state's only abortion clinic, asked the entire appeals court to review the ruling. The appeals court rejected the request Friday. Kentucky's anti-abortion governor, Republican Matt Bevin, hailed the decision. ACLU senior staff attorney Alexa Kolbi-Molinas calls it a disappointing decision...

US judge blocks Indiana 2nd trimester abortion procedure ban

A federal judge blocked an Indiana law that would ban a second-trimester abortion procedure on Friday, just days before the law was set to come into force. The order putting the Indiana law on hold was released hours after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to revive a similar law in Alabama that sought to ban dilation and evacuation abortions. The law passed by Indiana's Republican-dominated Legislature this spring calls the procedure "dismemberment abortion." It was set to become effective on July 1. The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana sued on behalf of two doctors who perform dilation and evacuation...
