JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon on Trump: My wealth no "gift from daddy"

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon said he could beat President Trump in a presidential election, before back-pedaling as his comments drew media attention."I think I could beat Trump," Dimon said early Wednesday during an event at his bank's New York headquarters, according to media accounts. "I'm as tough as he is, I'm smarter than he is. I would be fine. He could punch me all he wants, it wouldn't work with me. I'd fight right back."Dimon also took aim at Trump's wealth, saying of himself: "This wealthy New Yorker actually earned his money. It wasn't a gift from daddy."The executive...

ISTANBUL: Standard and Poor’s said on Friday it had affirmed Turkey’s sovereign ratings with a stable outlook, adding that the ratings could be lowered if it sees an increased likelihood of a systemic distress in the banking system.“We expect the Turkish economy to contract by 0.5 per cent this year, although there are major uncertainties surrounding this forecast”, S&P said, adding that the ratings could be lowered if growth weakens beyond its projections.“Even though financial market sentiment has improved and the lira has regained some ground since (August), we still expect the consequences will weigh on Turkey’s economic prospects in...

ASX reporting season sees confidence waning as dividend growth slows

By business reporter Stephen Letts "So far, not too bad" is about where Australia's corporate reporting season stands, but this week is the big test.It is the busiest block of results with around 70 of the top 200 companies dropping mainly half-year numbers. It also should give a clearer picture about how things are going across the key consumer, industrial and resources sectors."Reporting season is 37 per cent of the way through — by market capitalisation — and so far most of the results are in-line at the EPS [earnings per share] line, while the hits and misses were split equally,"...

Christmas Island believes it could be the next big tourist destination, but there's just one problem

AM By Tom Joyner As a remote tropical outpost teeming with unique wildlife, Christmas Island shouldn't have any trouble attracting visitors. Yet after more than a decade of hosting a detention centre that became the flashpoint for a divisive immigration policy, the island has an image problem.Today, a long — and as some say, unfair — association with immigration detention continues to be a thorn in the side of a growing industry: tourism. And with Prime Minister Scott Morrison announcing that the centre would reopen, misconceptions that irk locals like Alicia Hong, 19, seem unlikely to go away."When people ask me,...

Germany: US calling European cars a threat is ‘frightening’

MUNICH, Germany: German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Saturday labelled as “frightening” tough US trade rhetoric planning to declare European car imports a national security threat. “If these cars... suddenly spell a threat to US national security, then that is frightening to us,” she said. Merkel pointed out that the biggest car plant of German luxury brand BMW was not in Bavaria but in South Carolina, from where it exports vehicles to China. “All I can say is it would be good if we could resume proper talks with one another,” she said at the Munich Security Conference. “Then we will...
