Apple unveils larger iPhones, watches

Apple Inc. unveiled larger iPhones and watches based on the design of current models on Wednesday, confirming expectations that the company is making only minor changes to its lineup. Apple wants users to upgrade to newer, more expensive devices as a way to boost revenue as global demand for smartphones levels off. The strategy has helped Apple become the first publicly-traded U.S. company to hit a market value of more than $1 trillion earlier this year. Apple shares were down 0.9 per cent on Nasdaq. The new phones, based on last year’s iPhone X, are named XS and XS Max....

Uber insiders describe questionable decisions before its self-driving car killed a pedestrian

On March 18 one of Uber's self-driving cars killed a pedestrian, the first pedestrian fatality involving a self-driving car. As Uber prepares to return its cars to the roads, Business Insider spoke to current and former employees and viewed internal documents. These employees and documents described vast dysfunctionality in Uber’s Advanced Technologies Group, with rampant infighting and pressure to catch up to competitors, issues that these employees say continue to this day. Sources say engineers were pressured to "tune" the self-driving car for a smoother ride in preparation of a big, planned year-end demonstration of their progress. But that meant...

Amazon's HQ2 could add homeless residents to New York and Washington, DC — two cities with the worst homelessness crises in the US

A homeless man tries to stay warm in Manhattan. A Zillow senior economist found that Amazon's second headquarters, known as HQ2, could add more than 800 homeless residents to New York City and more than a dozen to Washington, DC on an annual basis. Both cities already suffer from some of the worst homelessness crises in the country. Rising homelessness in Seattle — the site of Amazon's current headquarters — could presage what's to come in each HQ2 site. Amazon's HQ2 announcement has ignited a war of words between local politicians, residents, and media outlets. While many have touted the...

Limiting screen time for your kid? It's harder than it looks

It is Saturday morning, and 10-year-old Henry Hailey is up at the crack of dawn. Still in PJs, his microphone-equipped headphones glowing blue in the dim basement, he fixates on the popular online game "Fortnite" on a large screen. "What?! Right as I was about to finish it, I died," he calls out disappointedly to his friend Gus, a fellow fifth-grader playing the game from his home just a few blocks away. "Dude, I should NOT have died." The digital battles resume, and Henry's enthusiasm never wanes. Would he play all day if his parents let him? "Probably," he concedes...

Space station gets 2 cargo deliveries in record 15 hours

The International Space Station has received two cargo deliveries in a record 15 hours. A U.S. commercial shipment arrived Monday, two days after blasting off from Virginia. NASA Astronaut Serena Aunon-Chancellor used the space station's robot arm to grab Northrop Grumman's capsule. It's named after Apollo 16 moonwalker and the first space shuttle commander John Young, who died in January. The station's German commander, Alexander Gerst, tweeted, "Welcome aboard, S.S. John Young!" Ice cream and other fresh food are the first things coming out. On Sunday, a Russian supply ship brought a full load. NASA says it is the quickest...

These are the 9 nuclear-armed countries and the 31 allies they've vowed to defend with the world's most devastating weapons

The mushroom cloud from Ivy Mike rises above the Pacific Ocean over Enewetak Atoll in the Marshall Islands, during the world's first test of a full scale thermonuclear device, on November 1, 1952. The United Nations has introduced a treaty that it believes will lead eventually to the total elimination of nuclear weapons. A recent watchdog report said that the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) is an historically significant effort that's gaining traction, which highlights the profound power imbalance between the few nuclear powers and many have-nots.  "The rate of adherence to the TPNW is faster than...
