Apple no longer ships free headphone dongles with new iPhones - Dotemirates

Apple no longer ships free headphone dongles with new iPhones

Apple included a spare dongle in the boxes of the iPhone X, 8, 8 Plus, 7, and 7 Plus phones, but it isn’t so generous this year when it comes to including a 3.5mm audio dongle in the box. The 3.5mm dongle is no longer a free accessory and the new iPhones won’t ship with Apple’s own fast Lightning to 3.5mm audio jack adapter. This includes the iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, and the iPhone 8, which used to include the free dongle. Instead, Apple will still sell you the dongle separately for $9. Despite it being the least expensive...

Abell 370: Galaxy Cluster Gravitational Lens

Explanation: What are those strange arcs? While imaging the cluster of galaxies Abell 370, astronomers noticed an unusual arc. The arc wasn't understood right away -- not until better images showed that the arc was a previously unseen type of astrophysical artifact of a gravitational lens, where the lens was the center of an entire cluster of galaxies. Today, we know that this arc, the brightest arc in the cluster, actually consists of two distorted images of a fairly normal galaxy that happens to lie far in the distance. Abell 370's gravity caused the background galaxies' light -- and others...

Will not join Apple TV service: Netflix

Netflix Inc, the world’s dominant streaming service, will not make its TV shows and movies available through Apple Inc’s upcoming video offering, Netflix Chief Executive Reed Hastings said on Monday. “We prefer to let our customers watch our content on our service,” Hastings told reporters at the company’s offices in Hollywood. “We have chosen not to integrate with their service.” Apple is expected to unveil a television and video service at an event on March 25, a move that will amp up competition for Netflix and others that deliver entertainment programing online. Sources familiar with the matter have told Reuters...

US warns Brazil about Huawei and 5G in talks

US officials have warned their Brazilian counterparts of their security concerns about Chinese telecom equipment maker Huawei Technologies Co during talks in Washington, a senior American official said on Monday. The United States has said Huawei technology in next-generation 5G networks could be used to spy on the West. China has rejected the accusations. The 5G issue is one of many security, defense and trade matters on the agenda as President Donald Trump and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro are slated to meet for the first time on Tuesday. “They (Brazilian officials) have had a whole host of different meetings here...

Tech giants will have to be regulated in future: EU's Timmermans

The European Union and authorities around the world will have to regulate big technology and social media companies at some stage to protect citizens, the deputy head of the European Commission said on Monday. First Vice President Frans Timmermans said introducing regulations would work better if online platforms, such as Google and Facebook, worked with authorities. Big tech has been criticized by politicians in the United States and Europe over issues ranging from Facebook’s losing track of users’ data to how Google ranks search results. “At some point, we will have to regulate,” Timmermans told the World Policy Forum in...

Apple's new iPad Air, mini now support Pencil

What was expected to be presented at next week's Apple special event turned out to be an early gift from the company. The iPhone maker on Monday announced the availability of an updated iPad Air and iPad mini, both of which are now powered by the company's own A12 Bionic chip that is found in the latest iPhone XS, XS Max and XR. The release came quietly and as a bit of a surprise; speculation is rife that Apple was to unveil a new iPad - or iPads - at its special event on March 25 at the Steve Jobs...

Devin Nunes sues Twitter for letting ‘Devin Nunes’ Mom’ and ‘Devin Nunes’ Cow’ insult him

US Representative Devin Nunes has sued Twitter and a handful of users for defamation and negligence, accusing Twitter of acting as a “vessel of opposition research” for hosting accounts that insulted Nunes. The suit is the latest of several filed against social media platforms for alleged bias against conservative politicians, none of which have made substantial progress in court. Nunes’ lawsuit mostly focuses on a cluster of Twitter accounts that Nunes claims were coordinating libelous attacks on him, primarily “Devin Nunes’ Cow”, the now-suspended “Devin Nunes’ Mom”, and the account of Republican political consultant Liz Mair. The complaint — published...
