Officials announce new identification of 9/11 victim remains

Authorities have identified the remains of another 9/11 victim found at the World Trade Center. The New York City medical examiners' office on Thursday said the woman is the 1,644th person to be linked to remains found at the site, nearly 18 years after hijackers crashed airplanes into the trade center's twin towers in 2001. The victim's name, which is being withheld, was confirmed through DNA testing of remains recovered in 2002. It's the second new identification of a World Trade Center victim's remains in 2019. The medical examiner says about 40% of the 2,753 people who died have never...

Woman charged in Michigan soldier's death guilty of murder

The wife of a U.S. Army sergeant from Michigan who plotted to kill her husband has been found guilty of murder. Kemia Hassel was convicted Thursday by a Berrien County jury in the death of Sgt. Tyrone Hassel III. The 23-year-old Hassel was fatally shot in an ambush on New Year's Eve while visiting his family in St. Joseph Township. Prosecutors contended during trial that Kemia Hassel told police she spent months planning her husband's death so she could continue a romantic relationship with 24-year-old Jeremy Cuellar. All three were soldiers stationed at Fort Stewart in Georgia. Judge Angela Pasula...

Turkey, US at odds again over Ankara’s ouster from F-35 program

ANKARA: The US announced it was formally removing Turkey from its F-35 fighter jet program on Wednesday, following the delivery of the first part of a Russian S-400 missile defense system to Ankara. “F-35 cannot coexist with a Russian intelligence collection platform that will be used to learn about its advanced capabilities,” the Pentagon said in a statement, adding that the removal would be completed by March 2020. Ankara, which has been cultivating closer ties with Moscow on defense procurement, had invested in the F-35 program, with Turkish defense companies producing 937 parts of the plane, and 100 of the...

"One Small Step...": Google Doodle Celebrates 50 Years Of Moon Landing

Fifty years ago, NASA's Apollo 11 mission marked mankind's journey to the moon. Google celebrates the 50th anniversary of the mission, which led to the very first moon landing. Apollo 11 had a gigantic team of 400,000 working on it. Among them, Neil Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin and Michael Collins were chosen to be the ones to carry the burden of all of mankind and venture into uncharted territory. The excitement, fear, dread and challenges of what happened when the astronauts blasted off from Florida's Kennedy Space Center on July 16, 1969 on NASA's Saturn V rocket, is encapsulated in...

Iranian seizes foreign oil tanker, crew accused of smuggling

Iran said on Thursday it had seized a foreign tanker in the Gulf, and the US military commander in the region said the United States would work "aggressively" to ensure free passage of vessels through the vital waterway. The United States blames Iran for a series of attacks on shipping in the world's most important oil artery since mid-May, accusations Tehran rejects but which have raised fears the long-time foes could stumble into war. It was unclear if the impounded ship was the same vessel Iran towed to safety on Sunday after sending a distress signal. Iranian state television had...

Clarification: Teen Detention Camp story

In a story July 17, The Associated Press reported that newly relaxed federal requirements are expediting the process for sending child migrants to live with relatives already in the U.S. The story should have specified the changes only apply to adult siblings and grandparents. An updated version is below: The nation's largest facility for migrant children has released hundreds of teens to relatives in recent days, easing overcrowding at the South Florida center that has come under intense criticism from Democratic lawmakers who call it cramped and regimented. The company that runs the Homestead facility, Caliburn International, said it has...
