Overlooked for a Nobel decades ago, astrophysicist Jocelyn Bell Burnell claims US$3-million science prize − and donates it to support diverse students - Dotemirates

Overlooked for a Nobel decades ago, astrophysicist Jocelyn Bell Burnell claims US$3-million science prize − and donates it to support diverse students

By her own admission, when Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell was growing up in Northern Ireland in the 1950s, she wasn’t much for poetry. “It was a bit hit and miss the way it was taught in school, so I don’t think it was for me,” said Dr. Bell Burnell, who would eventually choose numbers over letters, become a renowned astrophysicist and, mostly recently, claim the world’s most lucrative science prize. Yet, this week found Dr. Bell Burnell speaking to a packed house in Calgary, encouraging volunteers to stand up and recite astronomically themed poems as the kickoff to the annual...

Twitter removes accounts linked to Alex Jones, Infowars

Twitter has removed some accounts thought to be used to circumvent a ban on conspiracy-monger Alex Jones and Infowars, the company said Tuesday. A Twitter spokesman confirmed that the accounts had been removed but provided no additional comment. The company says it usually does not discuss specific accounts. Twitter permanently suspended @realalexjones and @infowars from Twitter and Periscope in early September, later than many other tech companies such as Apple and Facebook. It said it based that action in reports of tweets and videos that violated its policy against abusive behavior. The ban underscored the difficulty many social-media services face...

Google celebrates Android's 10th birthday with a look back at its history

Android turned 10 this year and to commemorate the occasion, Google brought out the family album to show images of its little robo-baby growing up. You can read the full post over at the official Google Blog. There are interesting tidbits and reminders of how far we’ve come. Android 1.0 didn’t even support on-screen keyboards! 1.5 Cupcake enabled those and good thing too, since hardware keyboards died off quickly. You can even trace the evolution of the Google Assistant. Starting with the Quick Search Box in 1.6 Donut, Voice Actions in 2.2 Froyo, Google Now in 4.1 Jelly Bean, “OK...

How thinking like a geologist could help us fight climate change

“Society as a whole is unable to think on anything like geologic time scales,” says Marcia Bjornerud. “Or even decadal time scales.” It’s clear that we need to think long-term about climate and the environment, but instead political leaders are constrained by the two-year Congressional cycle and those working in business are beholden to quarterly earnings. Bjornerud is a geologist at Lawrence University in Wisconsin and the author of Timefulness: How Thinking Like a Geologist Can Help Save the World. If people understood the history of the Earth, she argues, “we would perceive our world very differently.” The Verge spoke...

Ecologists posted photos showing that even deep sea-dwelling fish are affected by ocean trash and it’s really depressing

Latimeria or Coelacanth (Latimeria chalumnae Smith), a "living fossil," is the oldest known living lineage of Sarcopterygii (lobe-finned fish and tetrapods). UK-based environmental group Blue Planet Society tweeted images of a coelacanth fish with what appears to be discarded food packaging in its stomach. People on Twitter shared their disappointment over how human waste ended up in the undisturbed depths of the sea, where coelacanths are typically found. The bottom-dwelling fish is known as the "living fossil," since it has been around for more than 400 million years and only two known species exist today. The coelacanth pictured in the...
