Qualcomm announces the Snapdragon 855 processor for 5G phones

Snapdragon 855. That’s the name of Qualcomm’s new flagship processor for mobile phones, the company just announced at its Snapdragon Technology Summit in Hawaii. The announcement was expected — Qualcomm launched its predecessor, the Snapdragon 845, at the same conference almost exactly one year ago. But the new 855 isn’t just another spec bump — it’s the chip that will almost certainly appear in the first wave of 5G phones. Qualcomm has said this new platform will support “multi-gigabit” download speeds on 5G networks. See, this year’s Snapdragon Technology Summit is also one of the last major milestones before blazing-fast...

Media playback is unsupported on your device Media captionA harpoon was fired to catch some debris successfully The British-led mission to test techniques to clear up space junk has demonstrated a harpoon in orbit. The RemoveDebris satellite fired the projectile into a target board held at a distance on the end of a boom.Video of the event shows the miniature spear fly straight and true, and with such force that it actually breaks the target structure. But, importantly, the harpoon's barbs deploy and hold on to the board, preventing it from floating away.Prof Guglielmo Aglietti, from the University of Surrey in Guildford,...

Geneva — More than one billion young people risk damaging their hearing through excessive use of smartphones and other audio devices, the UN warned, proposing new safety standards for safe volume levels. In a bid to safeguard hearing, the World Health Organization and International Telecommunications Union issued a non-binding international standard for the manufacture and use of audio devices.Young people are particularly prone to risky listening habits.Around half of those between the ages of 12 and 35, or 1.1 billion people, are at risk due to “prolonged and excessive exposure to loud sounds, including music they listen to through personal audio...

Samsung Galaxy S9 goes 50 percent off list to $350 at Cricket Wireless

We're only a few days away from the official announcement of the already religiously leaked Galaxy S10, which may actually be the best time to purchase an "outdated" Galaxy S9. While its sequel is expected to offer significantly more screen real estate, a faster processor, up to twice as much memory, a grand total of four cameras, and modern in-display fingerprint recognition technology, all those upgrades will also drive the retail price through the roof. With a beautiful 5.8-inch Super AMOLED "Infinity" screen, more than respectable Snapdragon 845 processing power, decent cameras, and now Android 9.0 Pie software too, the Samsung...

Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e goes official with incredibly thin body, decent specs, low price

UPDATE: Well, that was fast. Mere hours after Evan Blass revealed the first leaked renders of a mysterious Galaxy Tab S5e, Samsung shattered the mystery, officially unveiling the new 10.5-inch slate with minimal fanfare. We're still five days away from the big Galaxy S10 announcement event, mind you, and we have no idea if a "regular" Galaxy Tab S5 is also in the pipeline, although nothing should be ruled out right now.Believe it or not, the Tab S5e is significantly thinner than the 7.1mm Tab S4, at a (record-breaking?) 5.5mm. Its screen bezels are also smaller, resulting in a shorter...

Do you use themes or custom launchers on your smartphone?

Nowadays, most popular manufacturers put a theme store on their upper-class handsets. And, for those who don't, there are always custom launchers that support 3rd party icon packs and some crazy customization options. But then again, having too much choice is sometimes a burden, isn't it? “This theme looks better than the last one, but lacks this and that”; “This theme would've been perfect if only it had x”, so on and so forth. Unless the stock UI skin is abysmal, we can see why many people choose to forgo the whole theme shenanigans overall.Where do you stand? Do you pick...

Apple extends the expiration date of its 'limited time' iPhone XR and XS trade-in deals again

iPhone XS vs iPhone XWhile the iPhone XR and XS are still technically available for starting prices of $749 and $999 respectively in the US, Apple has been aggressively promoting its "limited time" trade-in program allowing buyers to pay as little as $449 and $699 for the two new handsets when giving up a 7 Plus in full working condition.Kicked off more than two months ago, the official Apple Store deals are likely to last at least until March 25 around the world. The revised expiration date is currently listed in China only, as noticed by 9To5Mac earlier today, extending...
