Want to Be A Hacker? Go to Dallas. - Dotemirates

Want to Be A Hacker? Go to Dallas.

A man named Tinker clutches an HDMI cable as he bumps through the crowd milling in front of the stage at Family Karaoke, a joint on Dallas’s east side. A former Marine, Tinker has a solid but not overly muscled frame. Less weight lifter than baseball infielder. He has a voice that belongs on a live-fire exercise. It booms, even over the thrump of the techno blasting from two speaker towers on the stage.“Okay, what’s the first rule of this place?” he asks the crowd before answering his own question: “Don’t hack the venue!” This is the monthly meeting of...

Samsung has reportedly postponed the Galaxy Fold’s launch in China

Samsung has reportedly postponed the Chinese launch of its forthcoming Galaxy Fold smartphone, according to SamMobile. The site cites people familiar with the situation that the official reason is due to an issue with the venue, but notes that other activities related to the launch have also been delayed or canceled. Engadget Chinese editor in Chief Richard Lai also noted on Twitter that planned events in Hong Kong and Shanghai set to take place on Tuesday and Wednesday have been postponed. We’ve reached out to Samsung for comment, and will update this post if we hear back. Samsung Galaxy Fold...

Week 16 in review: All about the Galaxy Fold, OnePlus 7/7 Pro, Pixel 3a/3a XL

Welcome to your recap of the week's hottest tech stories. Week 16 of the year marked the first live encounters with the Galaxy Fold across the web (and here at GSMArena HQ) and it didn't take long for the first issues to arise. Several of the early units' displays malfunctioned and while removing the protective layer on top of the screen was the explanation for some of them, other seemingly were just defective. Samsung issued a statement that it will look into the display issues and that users are not to remove the protective layer and that this would be...

Weekly poll: rear vs. selfie camera, which is more important?

This week we saw the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G claim the title of "Best selfie camera", at least according to DxOMark. The phone's rear camera matched the score of the Huawei P30 Pro, which previously ruled alone. This along with the results from last week's poll got us wondering about front and rear cameras - which one is more important to you? We're well past the era when phones had only one camera (and it was on the back), yet for one reason or another the rear camera is still treated as more important and gets the better hardware. There...

A new podcast player lets you see what your friends are listening to and recommending

A new podcast app is designed to solve the problem of discovering new shows. Co-founders Pete Curley and Garret Heaton (who previously founded and sold HipChat) launched Swoot this past week, and the big idea is to let listeners see what shows their friends follow, as well as the shows and episodes they recommend, all in the name of getting people to discover new content. When you search for podcasts, for example, you may see your friend’s face pop up as a listener. Otherwise, it functions as any other podcast player does. The duo raised $3 million to bring the...

A web art exhibit forces visitors to confront the past

Saved emails, Geocities pages, an emulation of Windows 98. These are all parts of the deleted web — the web that can’t be easily accessed anymore. And they’re all part of a museum exhibition called “The Art Happens Here: Net Art Anthology,” currently showing at the New Museum. The name of the exhibition, “The Art Happens Here,” comes from a 1997 diagram by an artist duo named MTAA, depicting a lightning symbol in between two computers and an arrow pointing to it saying, “The art happens here.” “They wanted to show people that the artwork wasn’t something shown on a...

Stop what you’re doing, and gaze upon this PC made out of pasta

Everybody loves pasta. It’s a cheap source of calories, it’s easy to cook, and it comes in lots of cute shapes like bow ties. It’s so great that, perhaps a little unfairly, it’s become a little pigeonholed as just being a food. Now, thanks to a new pasta-based PC build spotted by Motherboard, those days are finallycoming to an end. The build is courtesy of YouTuber Laplanet Arts, who embarked on the project after his wife joked about making a PC out of pasta… so that’s exactly what he did. The machine is based on the hardware from an old...
