Expanded cord blood shows potential for use in adult bone marrow transplants - Dotemirates

Expanded cord blood shows potential for use in adult bone marrow transplants

Umbilical cord blood stem cells that are cultured and expanded outside the body before being used for bone marrow transplant in adult blood cancer patients appear safe and restore blood count recovery faster than standard cord blood. The findings, led by a Duke Cancer Institute researcher, are from a phase I/II study of the biologic treatment, NiCord, at 11 clinical trial sites. The study is publishing online Dec. 4 in the Journal of Clinical Oncology and advances efforts to improve cord blood use among adults who have been diagnosed with blood cancers. Cord blood has been shown to be a...

Hair strand can diagnose depression symptoms in teens

Washington: It might sound a bit strange but even a single hair from those lush locks could help in diagnosing depression. A new study examined the cortisol (steroid hormone released by the adrenal glands) levels in the hair of teens in order to monitor the effects of treatment. Researchers looked for potential relationships between the concentration of the stress hormone cortisol in the hair and adolescents' depression symptoms and found a surprising connection. Not only did high cortisol levels correspond to a higher likelihood of depression, but there was also a connection between low cortisol levels and mental health struggles....

Congo student with Ebola still finds a way to take exams

Claude Mabowa Sasi had lost his mother, a brother and a sister to Ebola. Instead of fearing death when he, too, was diagnosed with the disease, the young man had a different worry: How would he complete his college entrance exams? It had been his mother's greatest hope that Mabowa would go to college. To do so would require passing the secondary school baccalaureate, or "bac." But the exams are held only once a year in Congo, and the 21-year-old Mabowa was being held in medical isolation, unable to sit in the same room with other test-takers. So the medical...

Apple lovers beware: It carries 100 million bacteria

Washington: An apple a day keeps the doctor away? Are you sure? According to a recent study, an apple carries about 100 million bacteria. Besides extra fibre, flavonoids and flavour, you're also quaffing 10 times as many bacteria per fruit as your core-discarding counterparts, findings suggest. If this is good or bad for health depends on how they are grown. Published in Frontiers in Microbiology, a new study shows that organic apples harbour a more diverse and balanced bacterial community - which could make them healthier and tastier than conventional apples, as well as better for the environment. "The bacteria,...

Administering antibiotics before liver transplant proves beneficial

Washington: A recent study has found that administering antibiotics to mice for 10 days prior to a liver transplant leads to better liver function after surgery, and the same holds true for human beings too. After concluding the experiment in mice, scientists studied data from liver transplants performed between October 2013 and August 2015 revealing that the same phenomenon appears to hold true in humans. The statistics from human patients even demonstrated that the people who were in worse health prior to their surgeries but received pre-surgery antibiotics fared better after their transplants than the patients who were healthier prior...

Improve sexual desire and orgasm quality with nuts

Washington: Consuming as little as 60 grams nuts a day can improve sexual functions, suggests a study. The study was published in the journal 'Nutrients'. Researchers conducted the first nutritional intervention study with healthy participants of reproductive age in order to determine if regular consumption of nuts has any effect on sexual functions and on the quality of semen. The prevalence of erectile and sexual dysfunction is thought to affect 2 per cent of men under the age of 40 years, around 52 per cent of men aged 40 to 70 years and more than 85 per cent of men...
