Suranne Jones: ‘I put all the bad stuff to one side, and worked and worked’

The actor , a can-doer from Greater Manchester who hoiked herself up from regional musicals and the soaps to become a prized figure on stage and in prestige British telly, is a proactive and restless character. At 40, Jones says, she will sometimes look in the mirror and get the uncanny sense of her own mother staring back: “same crooked nose, same big eyes like a pixie”. But she has the lively energy of a teenager and sets a brisk walking pace, skipping along the pavement from the photography studio to the nearest pub, talking at 1.5 speed. Jones is...

Mumbai: Motherhood is one word that evokes a range of emotions. Everyone has fond memories of their mothers, and all mothers share an intangible – lifelong bond with their children. How do you turn kids into bookworms? All 10 children's laureates share their tips

It began in front of a log fire after a convivial dinner with friends and neighbours, Ted and Carol Hughes. I was grumbling about the lack of attention and credit generally given in the adult world to children’s books. Hughes, poet laureate at the time, said something like: “A fine children’s book is as important and worthwhile as any kind of literature, and maybe more so. Read and love a great story or poem when you’re young and the chances are that you’ll become a reader for life, and maybe a writer or an artist. Something should be done.” “You’re...

Venice Biennale evokes deep political thoughts

Venice: Fake news. Migration. Poverty. Global warming. Armed conflict. Political issues that light up the airwaves and social media are getting a very open airing at the 58th Venice Biennale contemporary art fair, like so much laundry hung out to dry in the lagoon breeze. American curator Ralph Rugoff, director of London's Hayward Gallery, titled the main exhibition "May You Live in Interesting Times," which opens Saturday and runs through till Nov 24. The title is itself an exemplary piece of fake news, delivered by a British lawmaker as Europe hurled toward World War II as an ancient Chinese curse....
