Photos from NASA’s lost Opportunity

This week, NASA said goodbye to Opportunity, a rover that roamed the surface of Mars for nearly 15 years before it was silenced by a planet-encompassing dust storm last summer. Over the years, the rover hit a lot of milestones, including completing a marathon. Its engineers managed to keep it working through standard Mars hazards like brutal temperature swings and dust storms and as it coped with problems of memory loss. In the end, its mission lasted 5,352 Martian days, which is almost 60 times longer than the 90-day mission that it was originally expected to complete. Data collected by...

Driverless electric truck starts deliveries on Swedish public road

JONKOPING, Sweden — Resembling the helmet of a Star Wars stormtrooper, a driverless electric truck began daily freight deliveries on a public road in Sweden on Wednesday, in what developer Einride and logistics customer DB Schenker described as a world first.Robert Falck, the CEO of Swedish start-up Einride, said the company was in partnership talks with major suppliers to help scale production and deliver orders, and the firm did not rule out future tie-ups with large truckmakers."This public road permit is a major milestone ... and it is a step to commercializing autonomous technology on roads," the former Volvo executive...

NASA spacecraft spots doomed lunar lander’s crash site on Moon’s surface

A NASA spacecraft in orbit around the Moon spotted the crash site of an Israeli robotic lander named Beresheet, which slammed into the lunar surface during a botched landing attempt in April. New pictures from the spacecraft show that the lander left a dark, 10-meter-long smudge across the Moon where it hit and then disintegrated. The ill-fated lander was the creation of an Israeli nonprofit called SpaceIL, which launched Beresheet on top of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in February. Before the crash, the lander was poised to make history by becoming the first spacecraft made with mostly private funding...

Media playback is unsupported on your device Media captionScientists have mapped the underground network of fungi that provide trees with nutrients. Research has shown that beneath every forest and wood there is a complex underground web of roots, fungi and bacteria helping to connect trees and plants to one another. This subterranean social network, nearly 500 million years old, has become known as the "wood wide web".Now, an international study has produced the first global map of the "mycorrhizal fungi networks" dominating this secretive world.Details appear in Nature journal.Using machine-learning, researchers from the Crowther Lab at ETH Zurich, Switzerland, and...

Self-driving vehicle pulled over by curious police officer

A self-driving shuttle got pulled over by police on its first day carrying passengers on a new Rhode Island route. Providence Police Chief Hugh Clements says an officer pulled over the odd-looking autonomous vehicle because he had never seen one before. The bus-like vehicle operated by Michigan-based May Mobility was dropping off passengers Wednesday morning when a police cruiser arrived with blinking lights and a siren. It was just hours after the public launch of a state-funded pilot shuttle service. The shuttle offers free rides on a 12-stop urban loop. Each vehicle holds six people, including an attendant who takes...

Motorola One Vision brings 21:9 display, 48MP camera and Exynos chipset

Motorola just took the wraps off its latest phone - the One Vision. The mid-ranger runs stock Android as a part of the Android One program and brings several firsts for a Moto phone - 21:9 cinematic screen, punch hole camera, and even a Samsung chipset. At the front we have a 6.3-inch FHD+ display of the super tall 21:9 ratio. There's a hole in the upper left corner for the 25MP selfie cam. Going around the back, we find the dual camera setup featuring a 48MP f/1.7 main sensor with OIS alongside a 5MP f/2.2 depth sensor. The primary...
