Oppo F11 Pro appears in hands-on video

Oppo was on a teaser spree for the F11 Pro last week, revealing the 48 MP main snapper, its massive screen, and the raising selfie camera. While we are waiting for an official announcement, a Twitter user from Vietnam posted a four-second video of the device, showcasing the big display and cool colors on the back. For some unknown reason, the leakster does not reveal the biggest talking point - the elevating selfie shooter. oppo F11 Pro pic.twitter.com/W6k1Er9uDF— Boby Đỗ (杜成忠) (@Boby25846908) February 20, 2019 The short clip reveals the neat paint job on the back of the Oppo F11...

Galaxy Watch, Gear S3 and Gear Sport receive One UI

With some of the flagship phones out of the way, Samsung is now focusing on bringing the new One UI to its smart wearables. These include the Samsung Galaxy Watch from last year that launched with the Galaxy Note9, the Gear Sport and the Gear S3. The latter is a three-year-old device so kudos to Samsung for still keeping it relevant. Aside from the new user interface that's more in line with the One UI on mobile devices, the new software update brings along a couple of new features too. New outdoor swimming mode has been added, high heart rate...

Xiaomi Q1 earnings report shows 27% growth in revenue

Xiaomi entered 2019 with a bang with its Mi 9 flagship and Redmi Note 7 series. The company released its earnings report for Q1 and the numbers are better than expected. Thanks to solid sales outside its home market of China, Xiaomi recorded CNY 43.8 billion ($6.3 billion) in revenue which is a 27% increase compared to the same period last year and 1.7 billion more than the previously estimated CNY 42.1 billion. The adjusted net income is valued at CNY 2.1 billion up from CNY 1.7 billion in Q1 of 2018. Despite the stagnating domestic market and 21% decline...

Huawei’s phone business would be decimated without Google’s Android

The news from Sunday night that Google would be complying with a US government edict and suspending business with Huawei is one of the most dramatic moments in Android’s history. Huawei, China’s most prolific smartphone vendor, had started 2019 with explosive double-digit growth and was on a path to eclipse Samsung as the world’s number one phone maker by the year’s end. Without Google’s Android support, however, that’s simply not going to happen — not in 2019 or 2020 or any other date in the future. Whether this proves to be the most consequential moment in Android’s history has yet...

Lutron’s new dimmer for Hue lights fixes the wall switch problem

If you have ever used smart light bulbs like the ones made by Hue or Lifx, you’re probably familiar with what happens when someone turns off the light switch that those bulbs are connected to: the lights lose all of their smarts and connectivity. Some solutions to this problem have been taping over the light switch so those unfamiliar with your home’s smart lighting setup don’t use it, or going into the switch itself and wiring it so it’s permanently “on.” Lutron’s new Aurora dimmer fixes this problem in a more convenient way: when you mount it on top of...

Facebook is experimenting with robots to push its AI research forward

Facebook is certainly a high-tech company, but it’s not one you would necessarily associate with robots. However, as the firm revealed today, that’s exactly where its researchers are looking next — trying to see how experiments in robotics can further its work in AI. This isn’t uncommon for big tech companies. A lot of firms, including Google, Nvidia, and Amazon, use robots as a platform to explore avenues of AI research. Controlling robots is, in many ways, trickier than challenges like playing board games and video games. With these latter tasks, researchers have access to simulated game environments, which allows...

Senator proposes strict Do Not Track rules in new bill

Online advertising has become more invasive than ever, and Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) announced today that he plans to introduce a bill that would create a Do Not Call list but for data tracking. Hawley’s Do Not Track Act would, if approved, allow people using an online service to opt out of any data tracking that isn’t necessary for that particular service to properly work. It would create a national list that would provide people with an option to block any secondary data tracking and penalize companies that continued to collect unnecessary data. “Big tech companies collect incredible amounts of...
