Google will end forced arbitration for employees in all disputes

Google announced today that it will end forced arbitration for its employees, after workers at the company criticized the policy. After reports of sexual misconduct by executives at Google, 20,000 workers walked off the job, and made an end to forced arbitration one of their demands. In response, Google announced that it would end the practice for sexual harassment and assault cases, but not more broadly. In today’s announcement, the company said it would expand that policy to current and future employees in any type of dispute. The policy will go into effect March 21st for employees around the world,...

Double duty power bank

It is difficult to get terribly excited about unsexy workhorses like power banks. They are mundane, but essential accessories for phones and tablets. That said, I cannot avoid a sneaking admiration for the latest ACE 10000 mAh powerbank from Pebble. The makers have answered the prayers of customers who own phones with two different types of charging ports: the standard Micro USB and the newer, Type C. Type C phone owners will be particularly happy with this product since the majority of power banks don’t have the requisite port. In addition to both type of ports, the power bank also...

Did you know that species of fish change sex in adulthood?

Washington: Five hundred species of fish change sex in adulthood, often in response to environmental cues, researchers have found. "I've followed the bluehead wrasse for years because sex change is so quick and is triggered by a visual cue. How sex can reverse so spectacularly has been a mystery for decades. The genes haven't changed. So it must be the signals that turn them off and on," said Prof Jenny Graves, one of the researchers of the study. Bluehead wrasses live in groups, on coral reefs of the Caribbean. A dominant male with a blue head protects a harem of...

Honor 9X shines in first official teaser, specs sheet leaks too

Honor 9X is up for arrival next week, but the Huawei subsidiary already revealed the design of the phone from the back. The Kirin 810-powered midranger will have three cameras on the back and a fingerprint scanner on the side, just like its flagship siblings Honor 20 and Honor 20 Pro. The device also appeared on TENAA with its full specs sheet, although the agency is yet to publish images. We see two phones with model numbers HLK-AL00 and HLK-TL00 which will have up to 8 GB RAM, 256 GB storage and a microSD slot for up to 512 gigs...

Hawaii activists get ready for start of work on telescope

Native Hawaiian groups vowed to protect Hawaii's tallest mountain from an attempt to resume construction of a giant telescope. They said they will gather peacefully at the base of Mauna Kea. The road to the summit will be closed Monday morning as trucks carrying construction equipment start to make their way to the peak. Scientists hope the massive telescope they plan to build atop Mauna Kea, a world-renowned location for astronomy, will help them peer back to the time just after the Big Bang and answer fundamental questions about the universe. But the site where they plan to build is...

Thinking about recyclables turning into new products, influences recycling

Washington: When consumers are reminded of the products that their recyclables can be turned into, they are more likely to recycle. For instance, if people are aware of the fact that their plastic bottles can be recycled into making a jacket, or that the aluminium cans can be turned into bicycles, they are expected to follow and encourage the idea of recycling. "Recycling rates in the United States are too low. For example, in 2015, only 25 per cent of waste was recycled," said Karen Winterich, one of the lead researchers of the project. As part of the study, researchers...

Hey TV, dim the lights!

The Indian millennial is no longer a lonely creature. Like Benedict Cumberbatch who has a hunch in the MG Hector advertisement, that voice assistants are becoming more humane in their interactions, the world of AI is turning our machines into talking creatures that will soon develop the ability to decipher what the human in the room in thinking. Till that happens, we are caught in a web -- literally -- of wired and wireless products, with voice assistants occupying the grandpa's chair and dominating urban living rooms. LG has decided to ratchet up things, even further. Last week the company...
