Tardiness saves Christchurch mother and son from terrorist’s wrath

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand: Being late for Friday prayers has saved the lives of two Christchurch residents. Siman Omar, 52, and her son Hamza Abdi, 20, were running late for Friday prayers at Al Noor mosque. Abdi dropped his mother at the gate of the mosque and drove off to find somewhere to park the car. Omar stopped to speak with a friend at the gate when she saw a short man wearing a helmet and carrying a big gun, striding through the gate. “He started shooting at the men taking their shoes off at the door. He just went ‘bam...

Pakistan wants peace with India, but conducts missile test

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has signaled a willingness to open peace talks with India as Prime Minister Narendra Modi appears set to return to power in New Delhi after an election fought in the shadow of renewed confrontation between the nuclear-armed enemies. But in a possible warning to India, Pakistan also announced that it has conducted a training launch of a Shaheen II, surface-to-surface ballistic missile, which it said is capable of delivering conventional and nuclear weapons at a range of up to 1,500 miles.“Shaheen II is a highly capable missile which fully meets Pakistan’s strategic needs toward maintenance of deterrence stability in...

Dutch, UK polls open, starting 4 days of European elections

THE HAGUE: Dutch and UK polls opened Thursday in elections for the European Parliament, starting four days of voting across the 28-nation bloc that pits supporters of deeper integration against populist Euroskeptics who want more power for their national governments.A half hour after voting started in the Netherlands, polls opened across the United Kingdom, the only other country voting Thursday, and a nation still wrestling with its plans to leave the European Union altogether and the leadership of embattled Prime Minister Theresa May.The elections, which end Sunday night, come as support is surging for populists and nationalists who want to...

Italian hostage freed after 3 years in Syria returns home

MILAN: Italy’s defense minister says an Italian who had been held hostage in Syria for three years has been released and returned to Italy. Defense Minister Elisabetta Trenta late Wednesday confirmed Alessandro Sandrini’s arrival at Rome’s Ciampino airport and thanked Italian intelligence services for their role in his liberation. Details were not disclosed. Sandrini, who is in his early 30s, disappeared after traveling to Turkey in October 2016, and wasn’t heard from for over a year. In July 2018, a dramatic video showed Sandrini wearing an orange jumpsuit flanked by masked men brandishing automatic weapons, appealing to Italy to help...

Israel cuts Gaza fishing limit after fire balloons

JERUSALEM: Israel reduced the offshore fishing limits it imposes for vessels operating out of Gaza from Thursday after Palestinians floated balloons fitted with incendiaries over the border, officials said. The cut came just two days after Israel restored the limits to those set in April ahead of an Israeli general election.“A decision was taken this Wednesday evening to reduce the fishing zone off the Gaza Strip to 10 nautical miles until further notice,” said COGAT, the defense ministry unit that oversees such regulations.“The decision was taken after the launch of incendiary balloons from Gaza toward Israel,” it added.Palestinians in Gaza have...

D-Day veterans revisit Normandy, recall horror and triumph

Planes spread out across the sky, nearly wingtip to wingtip. A sniper's bullet whizzing by the ear. Squeezing a dying soldier's hand, so he knew he was not alone. Across three quarters of a century, the old veterans remember that epic day on the beaches of Normandy. For historians, D-Day was a turning point in the war against Germany; for men who were among the 160,000 Allied fighters who mounted history's largest amphibious invasion, June 6, 1944, remains a kaleidoscope of memories, a signal moment of their youth. Not many of those brave men remain , and those that do...

Thai court blocks anti-junta politician from joining House

A Thai court on Thursday blocked the leader of a new anti-junta political party from taking his seat in Parliament while it determines whether he violated election rules. The ruling is likely to increase political tensions in Thailand, where the military has seized power from elected governments twice in the past 13 years and courts regularly issue rulings that critics call biased. The Constitutional Court accepted a case against Future Forward Party leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, who is accused of breaking election law by holding shares in a media company. The court barred him from taking his seat in the meantime....
