How Cognac Is Made (and How to Enjoy It)

Perhaps it’s strange to dedicate a day on the American calendar to a foreign spirit, but then again, almost all of the Cognac produced in France is exported and enjoyed elsewhere in the world. In fact, the reason we sip and savor the stuff on June 4, National Cognac Day—as well as all other days—isn’t because of the French, but rather, the Dutch.Back in the 16th century, sellers from the Netherlands set up shop in the Cognac region of Southwest France and wanted to ship the local wine back home. The problem? The wine ran the risk of spoiling during...

Tourism takes ‘tragic’ turn

The concept of ‘dark tourism’ — a term coined by professors John Lennon and Malcolm Foley of Glasgow Caledonian University — is relatively new and strange, and describes travel to destinations associated with death and suffering. Now, in a surprising move, the Uttarakhand tourism department is planning to encourage precisely that in Kedarnath, thanks to the initiative of the State’s Tourism and Culture Minister Satpal Maharaj. A Smriti Van (memorial forest) will be developed at Kedarnath where visitors will be able to learn about the 2013 disaster and pay homage to those who lost their lives in it. Interestingly, of...

Wari-Bateshwar settlement started in 300 BC, archaeologists says after recent findings

The newly found artifacts are from 2nd or 3rd century AD while the settlement in the area started in 3rd century BC, believes Rakhi Roy, regional director of the Department of Archaeology. The department acquired an abandoned household, a small part of Asom Raja’s fort, at Wari village near Bateshwar market in 2003. After four sessions of excavation, the department started work in the main part of the site in 2016 and completed the job earlier this year.Judging the ancient objects found in 15 levels under the ground, researchers say the abandoned homestead belonged to an elite family.“I believe the...

Nation outraged

Days after the mutilated body of three-year-old Twinkle Sharma was discovered at a dumping ground in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, the country has been rocked by widespread indignation with celebrities and netizens claiming that the minor was raped, had her eyes gouged out, and was doused with acid— none of it is factual as the post-mortem report concluded that the victim wasn’t raped. What’s more shocking is the communal colour the incident has acquired with enraged citizens comparing her gruesome death to the horrific rape and murder of Asifa Bano in Kathua. Now. the misinformation has spread like wildfire on social...

Kia Telluride: Riding the wave

Over the last decade, Kia has made massive strides in turning around the general perception of its brand image. While models like the Cadenza and the Quoris helped with their impressive design, build quality and refinement, the Stinger GT surprised everyone with its excellent performance credentials. However, things weren’t moving at the same pace when it came to its SUVs. While almost all its competitors were filling their portfolios with utility vehicles of different sizes and shapes, Kia has had just two offerings, the Sportage and the Sorento. Of the two, the Sorento was the only one that could be...

Woman with autism competing for Miss Florida title

A Florida woman with autism is competing for the title of Miss Florida. WFLA reports Rachel Barcellona will be the first contestant with an autism diagnosis to compete in the pageant, scheduled to take place later this month in Lakeland. She tells the television station that doctors said she'd never graduate from high school because of her diagnosis. She says the negative feedback didn't sit well with her. Barcellona began participating in pageants at age 5. She continued through much of elementary school and then quit. But she says the depression and anxiety she suffered in middle school led her...
