VENICE, Italy - A new exhibition in Venice aims to put refugees centre stage in a debate over whether art should try to change society. Rothko in Lampedusa showcases work by artists who have achieved international acclaim such as Ai Weiwei and Richard Mosse and those of five emerging artists from Syria, Iran, Iraq, Ivory Coast and Somalia who are also refugees. More than 100 people packed the opening on Friday of the exhibition that runs in parallel to the Venice Biennale. The theme of the biennale, the world's biggest art festival, is “May You Live in Interesting Times,” which...

Philippine beauty queen dreams of Palestine

MANILA: She has her father’s eyes and her mother’s hair. And that is good enough for Gazini Christiana Jordi Ganados, 24, who says that even though they are separated, at least on her face her parents are still together. The half-Palestinian, half-Filipino contender for the Miss Universe pageant this year credits her looks, especially her nose and height, to her Arab-Mediterranean father, whom she hopes to meet some day. “I’d love to meet him. I have no grudges because that won’t bring me anywhere. But instead I’ll just thank him, and know that he’s still alive,” Ganados told Arab News....

Bra myths undone

Wearing a bra every day also means that a woman has to deal with 'well-wishers' who end up spreading the zaniest of myths. Good thing we bust many of those herewearing Underwired Bras can cause breast cancer There is no definite scientific explanation for this well-known claim, be it dark colours or underwires. However, wearing the right size is extremely important to ensure the wire does not dig into the breast tissue, causing discomfort. In a country like India, it is almost unimaginable to step out of the house without putting on a bra. However, a lot of misconceptions exist...

Women of weaves

Bright hues, interesting drapes, smiles and laughter marked the celebration of National Handloom Day on Wednesday, as eminent people from different walks of life came together to celebrate the weavers and their hard work. Organised by women-only societies —Narayanpet Swashakti Mahila MAC, Mayitri Ikat Mahila Chenetha and Mahila Ikat Chaitanya Hasta Kala — the event was ably supported by Creative Bee Foundation and Abhihaara Social Enterprise — who have since years been the torch bearers of women empowerment and encouraging women weavers to be at the forefront (particularly from Narayanpet). Fox's Carlson calls white supremacy 'a hoax.'

Fox News host Tucker Carlson is under fire for his comments declaring white supremacy a hoax. Carlson said on his prime-time show on Tuesday that he'd never met anybody who considered white supremacy to be a good idea. He made his remarks a day before President Donald Trump visited El Paso, Texas, where a white gunman who had written an anti-Hispanic rant killed 22 people over the weekend. The Anti-Defamation League says that Carlson is using his platform to push out prejudice and doesn't deserve a spot on a major news network. There was no immediate response on Wednesday from...
