Google’s prototype AI translator translates your tone as well as your words

We all know that communication depends on more than just what you say. How you say it is often just as important. That’s why Google’s latest prototype AI translator doesn’t just translate the words coming out of your mouth, but also the tone and cadence of your voice. The system is called Translatotron, and Google’s researchers go into detail on how it works in a recent blog post. They don’t say that Translatotron will be coming to commercial products any time soon, but that will probably happen in time. As Google’s head of translation explained to The Verge earlier this...

Google updates Chrome OS with camera modes of all things

Google announced another update for Chrome OS, and this time it brought some rather unexpected features for Chromebooks and Pixel Slates. Key features include better media navigation between tabs, more photo modes and easier way to clean notifications. Google issues new updates every six weeks, but this one grabbed our attention particularly due to the Portrait Mode and Square Mode. We understand there are some people who take photos with their tablets, including a Pixel Slate, but we simply cannot fathom why would someone use a 12.3” device when a simple smartphone does a much better job. The media improvements...

Oarfish sightings in Japan not a sign of earthquakes

Experts have advised the people in Japan to refrain from seeing a mysterious kind of fish as a sign of the possibility of an earthquake. The experts concluded that spotting the creature on the beaches isn’t a sure-shot sign to foretell seismic calamity. Oarfish has become popular with Japanese folklore, where anecdotes have often cited that its presence on the Pacific beaches indicates an impending earthquake. Tokai University researchers in Japan concluded that the theory is invalid, after studying earthquake records tracing seismic activities for more than 90 years and the appearance of these deep-sea fish, including the ones caught...

Alexander von Humboldt surveying the entire world in 'Cosmos'

At 34, Alexander von Humboldt had already climbed the highest mountain in the world and spent a fortune on a Latin American expedition collecting plants, animals, artifacts and reams of statistics. Most importantly, he had survived the dangerous journey and was back in Europe with astonishing tales to tell. For the rest of his life Humboldt was sought after by kings, chancellors, ambassadors, prime ministers, emperors, artists and scientists. Some wanted his advice; some simply wanted to be close to genius. Through these many encounters, he was elevated to a position that had never existed before or afterwards — a...
