Aside from the new user interface that's more in line with the One UI on mobile devices, the new software update brings along a couple of new features too. New outdoor swimming mode has been added, high heart rate...

Netherlands vegetable seed developer wins World Food Prize

A seed developer from the Netherlands credited with introducing high quality disease-resistant vegetable seeds to more than 60 countries including the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia was awarded the 2019 World Food Prize on Monday. Simon Groot, a sixth generation seedsman, began his search to create better vegetable seeds to help farmers in Southeast Asia in 1981 at age 47 after his family's company was taken over by a larger corporation. He had learned 16 years earlier on his first trip to Indonesia that vegetable seeds developed for the temperate climate of Europe did poorly when planted in the tropics. He...

The French were probably sipping wine made from an identical grape to one used today back in medieval times.DNA from ancient grape seeds shows the grapevine behind a local vintage has been cultivated continuously for 900 years.Ancient grapes found at archaeological sites also reveal what the Romans grew in their vineyards 2,000 years ago. They may have made wines closely related to Pinot Noir and Syrah, according to scientists. It has long been suspected that some grape varieties used in modern wine are identical to plants grown hundreds of years ago. Vaping device maker sponsoring public health research

A historically black college in Tennessee is planning to research the impact of electronic cigarettes and vaping with a grant from vaping device maker JUUL Labs. Meharry Medical College in Nashville says that it and JUUL Labs have structured the $7.5 million grant in ways meant to ensure the "full autonomy" of the new Meharry Center for the Study of Social Determinants of Health, including "sole ownership of the sponsored research and complete control over publication of the findings." A statement from Meharry's president and CEO, Dr. James Hildreth, says few issues require more research than "the rising prevalence of...

'Homework gap' shows millions of students lack home internet

With no computer or internet at home, Raegan Byrd's homework assignments present a nightly challenge: How much can she get done using just her smartphone? On the tiny screen, she switches between web pages for research projects, losing track of tabs whenever friends send messages. She uses her thumbs to tap out school papers, but when glitches keep her from submitting assignments electronically, she writes them out by hand. "At least I have something, instead of nothing, to explain the situation," said Raegan, a high school senior in Hartford. She is among nearly 3 million students around the country who...
