Bundesliga club Stuttgart name Tim Walter as new head coach

In a statement released by Stuttgart on Monday the club said Tim Walter had joined the club on a two-year contract. Thomas Hitzlsperger, Stuttgart's board member in charge of sport, said Walter, who coached Holstein Kiel to a sixth-place finish in the second division this past season, promised to be a good fit due to his preference for attacking football and his knack for working with young players. "Together we want to put a greater emphasis on working with our own youth players and Tim Walter brings with him a great deal of experience in this area," Hitzlsperger said. For...

"Desperate" Joe Root Plots Ashes Success Down Under After Series Draw

Captain Joe Root put the focus firmly on winning the Ashes in Australia after England levelled their home series on Sunday, saying he was "desperate" to take the team forward. England won at The Oval by 135 runs in the fifth and final Ashes Test to tie the Ashes 2019 series at 2-2, ending their historic World Cup-winning season on a high. It meant the series finished in a draw for the first time since 1972, although holders Australia retain the urn. Root described the summer as "a huge success for English cricket" after their World Cup triumph in July.He...

Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson fires double to sink lacklustre Everton

It is these kind of frail and lukewarm performances that make it nigh on impossible to take Everton’s top-six aspirations seriously. Marco Silva overhauled his squad to the tune of more than £115m this summer, undoubtedly bolstering his attacking riches but his side’s defending here left a lot to be desired as Callum Wilson started and completed the scoring to earn Bournemouth a second win of the season. Ryan Fraser stepped off the bench to help the hosts regain the lead after Dominic Calvert‑Lewin’s equaliser, his first goal for 971 minutes, before Wilson seized on lax defending to seal victory....

James Maddison has Brendan Rodgers eulogising about his potential

James Maddison’s turn as a roving No 10 was the standout display as Manchester United broke a three‑game run without a win at Old Trafford. Leicester City may have lost to but their 22-year-old midfielder lit up the contest via a performance that illustrated how he would immediately make Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side better. Maddison embodies the type of quick-minded, technically astute player the United manager wants. To hear his manager, , say Maddison has a “swagger” and is reminiscent of “Philippe Coutinho” strengthened that sense while also highlighting the situation vacant at United marked “playmaker”. Emile Heskey: ‘I was...

Pep Guardiola believes Manchester City can learn and refocus after humbling

It did seem odd that, in the aftermath of Manchester City’s defeat to Norwich, there was talk of the champions needing to strengthen. By some accounts, Norwich’s entire squad cost less than a single City substitute, but yet – – it was the visitors who were felt to have a glaring absence in their team. The name being uttered with a sigh was that of Aymeric Laporte. The “most solid and incredible defender that we had in the previous season”, in Pep Guardiola’s words, was missing from the City team with a knee injury and will continue to be missing...
