German business with Iran down sharply as US sanctions bite

A German business group says German companies' trade with Iran has declined sharply as the United States turns up the economic heat on Tehran. Volker Treier, the foreign trade chief of the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry, told news agency dpa in comments published Sunday that German exports to Iran were down 50 percent in year-on-year terms in the first quarter, while Iranian exports to Germany dropped some 42 percent. Treier said that, of 120 German companies that were active in Iran, only 60 are still in the country. He said that "the U.S. sanctions affect economic...

US reportedly launches covert cyberattack against Iran

The US has covertly launched a cyberattack against an Iranian intelligence group's computer systems on the same day President Donald Trump pulled back on using more traditional methods of military force. The cyberattack, which were approved by Trump on Thursday , targeted computer systems used to control missile and rocket launches that were chosen months ago for potential disruption, a US official familiar with the matter said on Saturday. The strikes were carried out by US Cyber Command and in coordination with US Central Command, reports Efe news. The official declined to provide specific details about the cyberattack, but said...

Stunt siblings make history crossing Times Square on high wire

A brother and sister tightrope act crossed Times Square on a high wire 25 floors above the New York landmark on Sunday night. Nik and Lijana Wallenda, of the "Flying Wallendas" circus and stunt-performing family, walked from opposite sides of the square on a wire running 1,300 feet (396 meters) from 42nd Street to 47th Street. The two crossed midway on their 36-minute walk, Lijana, 42, sitting down so Nik, 40, could step over her, before she got up and continued her way, cheered on by a crowd of thousands below. "Only by the grace of God," said Lijana as...

Australia says 8 Australian children to return from Syria

Australia's prime minister says eight Australian offspring of two slain Islamic State group fighters have been removed from Syria in Australia's first organized repatriation from the conflict zone. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Monday the eight children being repatriated were in the care of Australian government officials. He would not identify the children or say when they would reach Australia. Media reported that they include five children and grandchildren of Sydney-born convicted terrorist Khaled Sharrouf and three children of Islamic State group fighter Yasin Rizvic, from Melbourne. Both men and their wives died in the conflict zone. The Australian...

Ready to 'consider' US plan to resolve conflict with Palestinians: Benjamin Netanyahu

Jerusalem: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday he is ready to "consider" a US plan to resolve his country's long-running conflict with the Palestinians. "We will consider the American proposal in a fair and open way," he said as he hosted US national security adviser John Bolton. The Palestinian leadership has already rejected the plan, citing US "bias" after the White House recognised bitterly divided Jerusalem as Israel's capital. "I don't understand how the Palestinians rejected the plan even before knowing what it contained," said Netanyahu. "That's not how you move forward." He was talking during a visit to...

Strong quake recorded in Indonesia's Banda Sea, no tsunami

A strong earthquake struck Monday in Indonesia's Banda Sea, but authorities said there is no tsunami threat. The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude 7.3 quake was centered 208 kilometers (129 miles) below the earth's surface. It was felt in parts of Indonesia and in East Timor's capital Dili but there were no reports of damage. Indonesia's geophysics agency said the deep quake didn't cause a tsunami. The Banda Sea quake was recorded minutes after a 6.1 tremblor in a thinly populated area 233 kilometers (144 miles) west of Papua province's Abepura town, at a depth of 20 kilometers (12...

Closing arguments set for missing Chinese scholar case

Closing arguments are set for the federal death penalty trial of a former University of Illinois doctoral student charged with kidnapping and killing a 26-year-old visiting scholar from China. Monday's closings follow a week and a half of testimony. If jurors convict Brendt Christensen, they must then decide whether he should be sentenced to die for beating Yingying Zhang to death with a baseball bat in 2017. The penalty phase could last weeks. Defense attorneys began the trial by admitting Christensen killed Zhang. It's part of a strategy to try to persuade jurors to spare Christensen's life. The case is...
