Underwater forest hampers search for missing Alabama woman

An underwater forest with trees as tall as 60 feet (18 meters) is hampering the nearly 2-week-old search for the body of a woman who was thrown off a boat in Alabama. Many trees weren't cut down when workers created Smith Lake more than 50 years ago, The Cullman Times reported Tuesday. The lake is northwest of Birmingham. The remaining trees, shown on underwater images released by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, are complicating the work, said Phil Hutchens, a member of the Cullman County Sheriff's Office dive team. Man seeks venue change over court's Confederate statue

A Louisiana man is asking the state's Supreme Court to move his trial away from a courthouse with a Confederate statue at it. Ronnie Anderson's request, filed Monday, says the 30-foot-tall Confederate monument outside the East Feliciana Parish Courthouse is a "symbol of racial intolerance, oppression and intimidation" to Anderson, who is black. Anderson is facing a charge of illegal possession of a stolen firearm. Lower courts have rejected his previous requests to move his trial because of the Confederate monument. The Advocate reported that the judge who rejected Anderson's request in November said it's "just a piece of granite,"...

Police: Tossing drugs in toilet could lead to 'meth-gators'

Police in Tennessee are asking residents not to toss drugs down the toilet, saying it could lead to "meth-gators" and stoned waterfowl. The warning from the Loretto Police Department on Facebook came after a man was arrested after he allegedly tried to flush methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. According to the police statement, flushed items end up in retention ponds frequented by ducks and geese. It says "we shudder to think what one all hyped up on meth would do." Further, it says if the drugs made it far enough downstream, "we could create meth-gators" in the Tennessee River in north...
