Foxconn is ready to move iPhone production out of China, if needed

The trade war between the United States and China could bring more pain to Apple with the US president threatening Beijing with imposing new tariffs on about $300 billion worth of Chinese goods, including Foxconn-built iPhones and iPads. The US already imposed tariffs on some of the accessories Apple sells, but those hardly have a significant impact on its bottom line. The iPhone is a whole different story of course and any extra tariffs will either result in a spike of the price for end users or a big hit in Apple's profit. In response to that a senior executive...

HTC Wildfire E probably exists: 5.45-inch LCD, Unisoc chipset and 2GB of RAM in it

HTC's future can't be too bright even though a recent financial report did bring some good news. The company is still working on new smartphones however, as evidenced by a report out of Russia. A retailer in the country has information on what is called the HTC Wildfire E, a throwback to the Wildfire S of 2011. The yet unannounced model supposedly has a 5.45-inch IPS display with an HD+ resolution in an 18:9 ratio. HTC Wildfire S from 2011 There's a Unisoc (formerly Spreadtrum) SoC in charge, the SC9863 in particular, with an octa-core Cortex-A55 processor in a 4x1.6GHz+4x1.2GHz...

Facebook’s $5 billion FTC fine is an embarrassing joke

Facebook’s stock went up after news of a record-breaking $5 billion FTC fine for various privacy violations broke today. That, as The New York Times’ Mike Isaac points out, is the real story here: the United States government spent months coming up with a punishment for Facebook’s long list of privacy-related bad behavior, and the best it could do was so weak that Facebook’s stock price went up. the fact that fb shares surged instead of sank on the FTC news is the story https://t.co/SztA1iAyOg pic.twitter.com/qDrzaR8J4Q— rat king (@MikeIsaac) July 12, 2019 From some other perspectives, that $5 billion fine...

Correction: Moon Landing-Movies story

In a story July 12 about moon-landing movies, The Associated Press erroneously reported the name of the filmmaker behind the "Apollo 11" documentary. He is Todd Douglas Miller, not Todd Michael Douglas. A corrected version of the story is below: The moon landing was a giant leap for movies, too The moon landing 50 years ago was a giant leap not just for mankind but for filmmaking By JAKE COYLE AP Film Writer NEW YORK (AP) — In 1964, Stanley Kubrick, on the recommendation of the science-fiction author Arthur C. Clarke, bought a telescope. "He got this Questar and he...

Earthquakes shake up Yucca Mountain nuke dump talk in Nevada

Recent California earthquakes that rattled Las Vegas have shaken up arguments on both sides of a stalled federal plan to entomb nuclear waste beneath a long-studied site in southern Nevada. Wyoming Republican Sen. John Barrasso said this week his legislation to jump-start the process to open the Yucca Mountain project is based on studies that take seismic activity into account, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported . Spent nuclear reactor fuel is currently stored at 121 sites in 35 states, and Barrasso, chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, said the earthquakes showed the need to move spent radioactive...
