Judge: Confederate statues will stay in Charlottesville

A Virginia judge has blocked the city of Charlottesville's effort to remove Confederate statues. The Daily Progress reports the three-day civil trial that ended Friday included a judge's ruling preventing the removal of statues of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. The planned removal of the Lee statue prompted a white nationalist rally in 2017 in which counter protester Heather Heyer was killed. Residents had sued Charlottesville, citing a state law that protects war memorials. The city said that law violated the U.S. Constitution because the statues send a racist message. Circuit Court Judge Richard Moore ruled Wednesday that the...

Middle East startups use internet's social power to create business opportunities

DUBAI: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is a maxim that applies to many life situations — but not when it comes to keeping your car or home running smoothly.Research shows that proactive and preventative maintenance can save home and business owners up to 20 percent on total upkeep costs.Whether they need proactive or reactive maintenance, homeowners in the MENA region have historically had to hire service providers whose efficiency and honesty are largely untested, with word-of-mouth recommendations being their safest bet.“For (the home-services) sector, there are many challenges that we fight every day in terms of getting the...

A Houston police officer was hospitalized in stable condition after he was shot with his own gun in a struggle with a suspect who along with three others stole two vehicles and attempted to kill a priest in a crime spree that played out as Democratic presidential candidates debated just miles away, the city's police chief said Friday. The 29-year-old officer was wearing a bulletproof vest when he was shot late Thursday but he was struck in the lower abdomen, just below the vest, police Chief Art Acevedo said during a news conference. Markings on the vest indicate the suspect...

A Middle East bikers' club hits the road for women's empowerment

DUBAI: History was made in 2018, when women in Saudi Arabia were permitted to drive for the first time since 1957. As the world watched female motorists across the Kingdom celebrate, a less visible set of women also quietly stepped out of the shadows and revved up their engines. “Women were interested in motorbikes, but they couldn’tride openly in Saudi Arabia,” said Zahra AbuAli, founder of social media group Saudi Women Riders and co-founder of The Litas Khobar, a Saudi chapter of the international all-female motorcycle group The Litas.“It was an underground scene. They used to wear baggy clothes, hide...
