Exclusive: The Pope of Hope Egypt’s Tawadros II on status of Copts, regional politics and Saudi reforms

CAIRO: It was July 21, 1969, and Neil Armstrong had just taken mankind’s first steps on the moon. In Egypt, 16-year-old Wagih Subhi Baqi Sulayman was transfixed by the achievement. More in hope than in any expectation of a reply, he wrote to the US astronaut asking for an autograph. A few weeks later, to the young man’s surprise, an envelope arrived containing a signed, color photo of the moon landing. Nearly 50 years later, while the hair is a little more gray, Wagih’s eyes remain very much on celestial matters. Of course, nobody refers to him by his birth...

The NYPD, the nation's largest police department, puts its eyes in the skies with new drone program

The nation’s largest police force said Tuesday it is adding drones to its crime-fighting arsenal. More than a dozen unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) will be used for search and rescue, to investigate hazardous materials, and to access crime scenes in tall buildings. The move is particularly significant benchmark for U.S. law enforcement agencies because smaller police departments often follow the lead of larger, big city forces like the New York Police Department (NYPD). “The NYPD has a trailblazing effect when it comes to new technology and almost all aspects of policing,” said Christopher Dickey, author of “Securing the City: Inside...

Heavyweight boxing is being brought back to life thanks to exciting triumvirate of stars

By Simon Smale There seems to be little doubt that we are emerging back into a golden age of heavyweight boxing. The 90kg and over division has long regarded itself the marquee of the sport, but after nearly two decades of stagnation — during which challengers of dubious provenance and pedigree were comfortably dispatched by the Klitschko brothers — the lustre of the coveted title has undoubtedly been dulled. In recent years, despite plenty of false-dawns, fight fans would have been better off heading to watch Creed for a chance at seeing a decent heavyweight contest. But Sunday's fight put paid to that.The...
